The Bureau of Fire is part of the Department of Public Safety and is headed by a Director who is a member of City Council.

The Fire Department is lead by a full time paid Fire Chief and three part time paid Assistant Fire Chiefs. Eight individual volunteer fire companies make up the department consisting of 9 Engines, 1-100' Tractor Drawn Aerial Ladder, 1-75' Quint Aerial Ladder, 1 Heavy Rescue Truck, and 6 Squad/Utility Vehicles and 2 Chiefs four wheel drive vehicles. Special equipment includes 2 multi-gas monitors and 5 thermal imaging cameras.

The Pottsville Fire Department provides fire & emergency responses to the 14,324 residents of the City of Pottsville and also parts of Norwegian & N. Manheim Townships on a first call basis, covering a 10 square mile area. The department also provides mutual aid support to other surrounding communities.
