PARKING GUIDE

Parking in any city can be a problem, so the City of Pottsville and its Parking Authority have combined to make it as easy and painless as possible for visitors, shoppers, workers and residents to find space for their vehicles throughout the city. Toward that end we provide the following guidelines and hope you find them helpful.

SHORT TERM PARKING
There are a variety of options available for visitors, shoppers, clients or tourists coming to Pottsville for visits ranging from less than an hour to several days. Many businesses provide exclusive parking areas for their visitors, so checking with them ahead of time is a good idea when possible.

METERS:
There are almost 1,000 parking meters located throughout the City where a quarter ($.25) will buy one hour. The maximum time on these meters varies from one to twenty-four hours, so be sure to check the time limits listed on the meter.
While many of the meters are located on the street, quite a few are available in the Arch Street Parking lot, the Capitol Parking Garage, and the Mahantongo Parking Garage (see 'Parking Garages & Lots' for details).
All meters are FREE from 5:00 p.m. on Fridays until 8:00 a.m. on Mondays.

ONE HOUR ZONES:
Much of the Downtown Business District provides one hour of FREE parking on the street. Signs are posted to identify those areas, and you can leave your car unattended for up to one hour, but do watch the clock to avoid going over and being ticketed. One hour zones are in effect seven days a week.

PATIENT PARKING:
Some doctors have made arrangements with the Parking Authority for patient parking. Check with your doctor to see if this is the case, and follow his or her instructions.

DAILY, WEEKLY OR EMPLOYEE PARKING
For those needing to park their vehicles for more than just a few hours, arrangements can be made for parking by the day, the week, or the month.

CONTRACTORS:
Meters may be bagged in your work area for one or more days for a dollar and a half per day ($1.50). Contact the front desk at City Hall for details.

EMPLOYEE, DAILY OR MONTHLY PARKING:
Employees of local businesses, or others needing regular parking on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis, are encouraged to park in the Parking Authority Garages or Lots (see 'Parking Garages & Lots')

BUS TRIPS:
Groups can park on the roof level at either Parking Authority Garage for one or more days at two dollars ($2.00) per day, or at the Union Street Lot for a dollar and a half ($1.50). Contact your group organizer or the Parking Authority for more details.

RESIDENTIAL PARKING
METERS:
Residential parking permits are available for certain areas outside the Downtown Business District for metered parking spaces. These permits are issued to residents to pay for metered parking on an annual basis for a specific area near their homes. The current fee is twenty-four dollars ($24.00) per year and is limited to two vehicles per location. They are not transferable, and the do NOT guarantee that a space will be available at any given time - only that you will not have to pay the meter to park when a space is available.

RESIDENTS ONLY LOTS:
A monthly permit is required to park in the residential lot at 6th and Mahantongo Street, where a limited number of spaces are available for people who live nearby. The cost is twenty dollars ($20.00) per month. Vehicles without permits in that lot will be ticketed.

RESIDENTS ONLY AREAS:
Certain areas of the City are designated for RESIDENT PARKING ONLY and are identified by signs. Parking here is reserved for the residents of that specific area, and their guests. Permits are available for twenty four dollars ($24.00) per year from the Parking Authority. Unauthorized vehicles in those areas will be ticketed.

SPECIAL PARKING RULES
Occasionally, the City must restrict parking in certain areas temporarily for specific purposes. Generally, when conditions permit, temporary signs are erected the evening before that restriction begins and removed immediately afterward. Sometimes, the signs are put up on rather short notice, so it is a good idea to watch for these temporary signs whenever you park.

STREET CLEANING:
On a varying schedule the City restricts parking so that the street cleaning machines may do their work. In some areas this is designated by permanent signs restricting parking hours on certain days of the week. In other areas parking is restricted by use of temporary NO PARKING signs. Generally the signs are one of two types; either a yellow signs on parking meters or pink cardboard signs hung on whatever is available, such as trees or fences.

PARADES OR SPECIAL EVENTS:
During special events such as parades, street fairs, races, etc., the City may restrict parking in affected areas. Again, if possible, the temporary NO PARKING signs will be placed the previous evening. On occasion the Police may try to contact owners of vehicles parked along affected streets to have the vehicles removed, but vehicles not removed in a timely manner may be ticketed and/or towed away. Please keep an eye on the calendar and the local media to avoid problems during special events or holidays, or click here to view our Special Events Guide.

SNOW EMERGENCIES:
The City of Pottsville has a Snow Emergency Plan which takes effect when a sizable amount of snow falls, making it necessary to place restrictions on parking and driving in the City. Click the link to view the Snow Emergency Plan.
