General Info
The Pottsville Bureau of Police Explorer Post was chartered in 1990 by the Boy Scouts of America, Hawk Mountain Council, and was selected Post of the Year in 1994. It is open to boys and girls aged 15 to 21 (14 if the applicant has completed eighth grade), and meets twice per month on Thursday evenings.
The purpose of the Post is to allow young people a chance to experience first hand the challenges and rewards of a career in law enforcement, and to help them develop leadership and citizenship skills.
Activities include classroom instruction as well as hands-on training, and to date, over 200 Explorers have participated.

Crew Members will also have an opportunity to display teamwork and leadership skills, and perform community service activities.

Ride Along Program
The purpose of the Pottsville Bureau of Police Ride-Along Program is to provide Crew Members with a firsthand view of the law enforcement patrol function as well as a broader knowledge of basic police procedures.
Explorers may Ride Along for a maximum of four hours per day between 8:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m., and for a maximum of twelve hours per month.
Explorers will not under any circumstances be permitted to carry or handle a firearm while participating in the Ride Along Program, nor will they at any time participate in police action which would place the Explorer in a hazardous situation. The Explorer will remain in the police vehicle unless specifically told otherwise by the Ride Along Officer.
To qualify for the Ride Along Program, the Explorer must be at least 16 years of age and be approved by the Explorer. They must also have successfully completed the Ride Along Training Block, and have the appropriate consent and release forms on file with the Post.
