In keeping with the belief that Community Policing requires a true partnership with the community, the Pottsville Bureau of Police has established special liaison programs to enhance that partnership.

DOWNTOWN AND BUSINESS DISTRICT LIAISON OFFICER

The historic downtown is the heart of the City of Pottsville. Like most old city downtowns, it experienced a downturn when the era of the shopping malls began. Historic Downtown Pottsville is resurging as a service and retail business center. The Centre Street Corridor and the several city blocks which intersect are worth a visit.

The Pottsville Bureau of Police recognizes the importance of the city's business district and has assigned a senior member to act as the single point of contact for matters pertaining to the business district. Parking availability and convenience, traffic flow, loitering, clean up, and a business - and customer - friendly atmosphere are but a few of the issues being addressed by the Business District Liaison Program.

For more information about the Pottsville Bureau of Police Business District Liaison Program, contact Captain Joe Clarkson at (570)622-1234 between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. on Monday through Friday.

PUBLIC HOUSING LIAISON OFFICER

Nearly ten percent (10%) of the total population of the City of Pottsville lives in publicly subsidized housing. Public housing residents, particularly those living in the densely populated housing "projects", were plagued by drug dealers and other criminal behavior. The City of Pottsville acted firmly to correct that situation.

In recognition of the special problems in our public housing units, the Pottsville Bureau of Police initiated the Public Housing Liaison Officer Program in conjunction with the Pottsville Housing Authority.

The Public Housing Liaison Program dedicates the services of a police officer to identify and ameliorate crime problems encountered by residents. Residents have a special anonymous telephone number to call to report problems the encounter. The Public Housing Liaison Officer makes himself available at the various housing project sites to discuss problems with the residents. His approach is that of a problem solver, making referrals to service agencies when appropriate, and bringing special enforcement personnel - such as the Drug Task Force - into operation when appropriate.

For more information about the Public Housing Liaison Program, contact Officer Gino Yourey at (570)622-1234, voicemail extension 178. Officer Yourey is generally on duty between 4:00 p.m. and midnight. Officer Yourey can also be reached by email:
