TRAFFIC SAFETY CORRIDOR
Traffic Safety Corridor operations generally consist of enforcement activities that are coordinated with other departments in the area to address specific problems. Officers would work specific areas and hours in order to discourage speeding, encourage seat belt and child restraint useage, or achieve similar goals. These are often highly publicized events aimed at prevention rather than apprehension of violators. Officers engaged in these activities use specially equipped police vehicles and have been trained in the use of advanced speed detection devices such as VASCAR.
DUI PATROLS
DUI Patrols are another maximum effort operation, using publicity, increased officer presence, and strict enforcement to prevent tragedy by discouraging or apprehending drunken drivers. During special DUI enforcement operations, officers from Police Departments throughout the area participate, often using Pottsville as a base of operation. Roving patrols target areas where drunken driving is a problem, and drivers arrested for DUI are processed by specially trained personnel using advanced equipment to video-tape sobriety tests and determine the amount of alcohol in the driver's bloodstream.
DRUG INVESTIGATIONS
Enforcement operations specifically targetting drug law violations are carried out in conjunction with various agencies. Investigations such as these often require much more time and expertise than is generally available to any single department, and the multi-agency approach allows resources to be pooled for maximum effectiveness. The Pottsville Bureau of Police is a major contributor of manpower and experience to the effort, maintaining it's own dedicated Drug Investigations Unit.
ENTRY TEAM
The Pottsville Police Entry Team is a tactical unit possessing capabilities for high risk warrant services and other extraordinary situations. Initial training of the group was completed in April 1999. The tactical team regularly participates in specialized weapons and situational training as a unit and is now classified as being on active operational status. They are equipped and prepared to effectively respond to unforeseen incidents as well as successfully carry out scheduled events in support of Bureau investigations.
CRISIS NEGOTIATION TEAM
Crisis negotiations require considerable expertise and talent, and the Pottsville Bureau of Police maintains a small cadre of officers who attend training in that area on a regular basis. These officers would be called upon to peacefully resolve critical incidents through dialogue, offering real and practical alternatives to violent behavior in stressful circumstances.
